Shavonne Shorter is a fourth year doctoral candidate in the Organizational Communication division of the Brian Lamb School of Communication (M.A.-Purdue University; B.A.-Frostburg State University). Her research interests include investigating the innately political nature of organizing. Shorter enjoys researching organizing in contexts such as education, politics, and within the media. Currently she is in the process of completing her dissertation work on how communication plays a significant role in the recruitment and retention of minority students within graduate education. Her scholarship has been published in Health Communication and presented at conferences sponsored by the International Communication Association, National Communication Association, and Eastern Communication Association.
In addition to studying organizing, she enjoys merging her studies with practical service by serving in a variety of academic and professional organizations. Currently she is serving a second term as the President of the Black Graduate Student Association at Purdue and previously she has served as the President of the Communication Graduate Student Association.
As a first generation, Black, woman, graduate student she knows first hand how challenging graduate study can be. If not for a variety of people she knows she would not have made it to her final year of graduate education. She attributes her success to her extremely supportive Advisor, Dr. Stacey Connaughton, surrounding herself with encouraging colleagues and friends, and a resolve to gain her Ph.D. so that she can produce work that will allow others to gain access to graduate education. Shorter enjoys connecting with scholars from various disciplines and she may be contacted at srshorte@purdue.edu.
