Hi everyone,
See below a great call for abstract! Submission date August 15. Any ideas?
Critical Articulations of Race, Gender and Sexual Orientation
Edited by Sheena C. Howard, Ph.D.
Edited Book: Call for Chapters
Call for extended abstracts/ proposals for a text titled: "Critical Articulations of Race, Gender and Sexual Orientation”
Background/ Aim of Volume:
This text features engaging scholarly essays, poems, and creative writings that all examine the meaning of race, gender and sexual orientation as interlocking systems of oppression, which influence ones lived experience(s). The writers in this text draw certain interpretations based on signs, symbols, and culture. Each chapter in this volume interrogates the notion of identity being socially constructed, yet interconnected and shaped by cultural associations, expanding on the idea that we as individuals live in an identity matrix – meaning, our self concept, experiences and interpretations originate or are developed from the culture that we are embedded in. These essays address the aforementioned notion in creative yet, critical ways. The shaping of ones identity, communication and worldview can be read, shaped and understood through life, art, popular culture, mass media and cross-cultural interactions, amongst other things. The aptness of this work lies in its ability to!
provide a meaningful and creative space to analyze identity and identity politics- highlighting the complexities surrounding race, gender and sexual orientation and interlocking systems of identity formation in the 21st century.
There is a scarcity of published literature on the experiences of LGBT people of color as it relates to negotiating identity, developing identity, the ways in which society shapes ones worldview and communication dynamics. The Queer Identity Matrix is identified in Black Queer Identity Matrix: Towards An Integrated Queer of Color Framework (2013) as race, gender and sexual orientation working as interlocking systems of oppression as one navigates societal and structural barriers – thus, triple jeopardy minorities operate within a matrix of oppression or disadvantage. This volume is specifically focused on personal narratives, self-reflexive analysis and ethnographic inquiry around race, gender and sexual orientation.
There are few books that examine the intricacies of race, gender and sexual orientation with a specific focus on a multitude of ethnic and racial identities. The impetus of this volume is to illuminate connections as well as differences between and among racial, gender and sexual minorities both locally and globally.
The author welcomes submissions focusing on (but not limited to):
Qualitative/quantitative research around the intersections of race, gender and sexual orientation in various contexts (including but not limited to organizational, interpersonal, sexual) Autoethonographic accounts of the intersections of race, gender and sexual orientation Autoethnographic accounts of “coming out”
Coming to age stories that relate to race, gender and/or sexual orientation The ways in which sexual, racial and gendered minorities navigate within an oppressive society Qualitative/quantitative research around “coming out” Qualitative/quantitative research around identity development/ the stages of accepting ones identity Influence of race, gender and sexual orientation in the workplace Influence of race, gender and sexual orientation in public discourse Poems around race, gender and sexual orientation Poems around “coming out” Short stories/essays around “coming out”/ race, gender and sexuality Bisexuality as a space of oppression Transgender identity as a space of oppression
Specific focus is placed on unique experiences of minority groups (ie. – based on able- bodiedness, race, ethnicity, health, class, ect)
