Research ideas I've been thinking about lately are at the intersections of Interpersonal & Family Communication and Organizational Communication. For me, this is starting to take shape as the ways that we speak to our family members/close others about work, the advice we choose to give them, and/or how our work "lives" impact our family/other relationships.
For instance, I'm in the process of developing a project that focuses on understanding how/if/the types of advice parents send to their "emerging adult" children (i.e., aged 18-25/while they are at college) about career development and preparation. Moreover, I'm interested in how college-aged children evaluate this advice and whether they act on it or not.
I'm thinking about bringing in notions of "historical time" as well to examine the ways in which so-called "helicopter parenting" does (or maybe doesn't) impact this crucial period of career development and preparation.
