I'd like to share with you my research project that I'm doing for my Bilsland Strategic Initiatives Fellowship. Basically, I'm examining the barriers that married, international graduate students at Purdue face trying to afford adequate healthcare for their spouses and/or children.
So far from the focus groups, the narratives that we've heard from participants are quite depressing. There certainly is a need out there for Purdue to offer students more health insurance options for their (dependent) families.
Given that graduate students form an integral part of the research community on campus, it can only hurt their studies (and work), if they're worrying incessantly about the well-being of their families. So hopefully, by the time we complete the project, we will have some definite suggestions to offer Purdue on how the university might be able to assist married, international students in getting adequate health insurance for their families.
