Edited Volume on Health Care Issues for LGBT People
We invite submissions for an edited volume aimed at health care professionals, health care support services, LGBT advocacy organizations, and college/university faculty who specialize in health communication, organizational communication, LGBT studies, Women and Feminist Studies, and/or intercultural communication.
The volume includes different sections that each focuses on an important aspect of health care for LGBT people. The sections (subject to slight revision) are: health issues for LGBT people-depression/anxiety, substance use, fitness; systematic harassment, stigma, disparities, and discrimination in health care; competency and education in serving LGBT people in health care settings; media representations of health-related issues concerning LGBT people; and the history of political activism on behalf of LGBT people.
Possible subtopics include but are not limited to:
* aging baby boomers (elder care for LGBT people)
* teen depression and suicide concerns
* trends in training health care professionals for diverse work environment
* communication competency for health care professionals
* harassment of LGTB patients in health care settings
* LGBT people and mental health services
* HIV/AIDS and LGBT health care
* LGBT health care and race/ethnicity
* LGBT youth and health care
* health care for children of LGBT couples
* media representations of LGBT people with illnesses and/or as patients in health
care settings
* physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being for LGBT people
* fluidity of sexual orientation and social norms
* health and well-being of LGBT relationships
Potential contributors should send a biographical sketch (100-150 words) along with an extended abstract (1,000-2,000 words) identifying your study's central research question(s), research method(s) and theories used, and findings or projected findings to BOTH editors at vharvey@csustan.edu and housel@hope.edu by Friday, March 1. If you have already completed a manuscript, please send that along with the abstract and biographical sketch. Manuscripts should be APA Style (5th edition) in in-text citation and reference list. Manuscripts should be no more than 20 pages, excluding reference list and footnotes.
Research essays should be written for a general readership. Please include proposed discussion questions and, if applicable, suggestions for companion exercises (such as for an in-service workshop or class assignment). Please Note: We are seeking proposals for academic studies that use qualitative and quantitative methodological tools (not personal narratives). This project would especially suit researchers who are on the tail end of a study, as we are requesting completed manuscripts by Monday, July 15.
